MAC Cosmetics Holds Art Basel Party for Their New Collection With an Heiress -- and Not That Heiress
Paris Hilton isn't the only heiress with a connection to beauty and fashion -- Daphne Guinness is collaborating with MAC Cosmetics on Daphne Guinness for MAC.
Outside of New York City, most Americans haven't head of Daphne Guinness. She is blond, crazy well dressed, and one of the posh heirs to the Guinness Stout fortune. She lives in both her native London and in New York, and because of her penchant of collecting couture clothes, she's a fashionista par excellence.
She's created a perfume with Commes des Garcons, and a line of shirts with London's famed Dover Street Market, owned also by Commes des Garcons. Now MAC Cosmetics, known for its collaborations with unusually styled people like Dita von Teese and Lady Gaga, is releasing a Daphne Guinness for MAC collection the day after Christmas.
STORY: Inside the Art Basel Fair -- Miami's A-List Party
Guinness is far from your everyday heiress fashionista. She's done a curation of her clothing collection at FIT, and when the London fashion editor Isabella Blow committed suicide, Guinness bought her entire collection of clothes -- mostly by her friend Alexander McQueen -- to curate them. Guinness is also famous for a wildly edgy style -- think Gwen Stefani meets Lady Gaga -- and for her relationship to famed French philosopher Henri Bernard-Levy (older and married, of course).
So why Guinness for MAC? Clearly, the New York executives at MAC, like creative Director James Gager and Estee Lauder head honcho John Demsey are smitten with her and her image.
The collection out December 26 is based on pinks, seafoam blue, purple -- and a black lipstick. This is not what you call a commercial idea. But it is an interesting and artistiic one.
This past weekend at Art Basel Miami, MAC had a finale party at Soho Beach House with hotelier Andre Balasz, China Chow, designer Yigal Azrouel, photographer Miles Aldridge and lots of arty and chic people. This is one beauty brand that does not pick the easy sell!
However, it's going to put another heiress into the spotlight. We have a feeling Daphne could be starting a fashion line at any moment. Will her makeup sell? In New York and London, it's likely. Anywhere else -- it's anyone's guess.
