Marchesa in Talks With the NFL to Design Women's T-Shirts for New York Jets
Female fans of the New York Jets -- or football widows to the New York Jets -- are about to get much chicer, as well as lucky.
The design team of Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig of Marchesa are talking to the team about making women's T-shirts as part of the Jets merchandising.
Why Marchesa? They make gowns that are over-the-top glam, and they don't even do sportswear or day clothes. But Georgina's husband, Harvey Weinstein -- movie producer extraordinaire of The Iron Lady, W.E, The Artist, The King's Speach and My Week With Marilyn -- is a huge Jets fan. So the wife of Jets' owner Woody Johnson, Suzanne Johnson, reached out to Marchesa's Chapman with the germ of the idea.
The New York Post says Johnson's already got promotional plans for New York fashion week in February 2012 should this all come together.
"If Marchesa puts the shirt in their show, I will make (Jets quarterback) Mark Sanchez walk that model down the runway," Johnson said. "I will beg him."
The NFL has not confirmed the partnership yet, but said, "As we look towards Year 3 of our women's apparel campaign and at new ways to expand our apparel offerings for our female fans, we are exploring a variety of opportunities."
FYI, female products tied to the NBA have been pretty successful -- one line through Macy's features T-shirts and coats for basketball fans -- so apparently now Monica Botkier has been approached to design a line of tote bags and handbags associated with the NBA.
