Sarah Jessica Parker, Selma Blair, Mena Suvari Wear Martin Margiela to H&M Collection Launch (Video)
The Belgian-born designer was part of the '90s Deconstructionist movement but sold his brand to Diesel in 2002. The company is carrying on his work, which H&M is bringing to the masses.
The New York global launch of the fashion collaboration between Maison Martin Margiela and H&M drew an impressive list of actresses and fashion names.
Seen wearing Margiela's unusual black designs -- some of which looked really fabulous Halloween costumes -- were Sarah Jessica Parker, Julianne Moore, Selma Blair, Mena Suvari as well Alan Cumming, Gossip Girls star Chace Crawford, rapper/designer Kanye West (without Kim Kardashian), lots of tall skinny models and fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth.

The launch party was held on Tuesday at 5 Beekman Street, an historical building in the financial district. Now an abandoned nine-story building, the site was the perfect urban setting for Margiela, whose first Paris show in 1989 featured models walking through a broken bottle and trash-strewn vacant lot on the outskirts of Paris, rock music blasting through the neighborhood. That collection included a leather butcher's apron reworked into a seductive evening gown, and an old tulle dress remade into sharply tailored jacket with seams and hems left rough and unraveling. His work was a virtual slap in the face of the Paris couture crowd and inspired many followers.

Black was the definitely the color of the night with SJP choosing a black and white lace and jacket ensemble. Moore wore a double-breasted black pantsuit and Suvari’s flesh-toned top featured an amusing faux black bra.
"It's an amazing collection! Margiela is a beautiful brand -- arty, iconoclastic and always edgy," Moore told the H&M cameras. Parker, a long time fan of the designer commented, "Its incredible, so exciting to celebrae one of my favofrite desingers. They [his designs] are mysterious and compelling."

The VIPS -- including Diesel’s founder Renzo Rosso, designers Olivier Theyskens and Alexander Wang, as well as club scene icon Susanne Bartsch -- were invited he day before by H&M to a "styling suite" at the Mercer Hotel, which meant that the partygoers could preview the collection before shopping the clothes themselves.
The Martin Margiela House and H&M collaboration will hit H&M stores and be available online on Nov. 15. Also available that day, several of Margiela's most iconic designs, which have been reissued specifically for H&M.
