'Mirror Mirror' App Lets Fans Dress Snow White in Eiko Ishioka's Spectacular Costumes
Several of Eiko Ishioka's amazing designs are featured on the free app that can be played on iPads, iPhones and iPod Touch.
Relativity's new film, Mirror Mirror, a sweet and amusing update of the classic Snow White fairy tale, (starring Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Armie Hammer as the Handsome Prince and Lily Collins as Snow White) is sure to appeal to a young female audience. The film, which opens on March 30, also features breathtaking and surreal costumes designed by the late Oscar-winning designer Eiko Ishioka.
Capitalizing on the young female audience, the film now has an app for that. It's called Dress Up Snow, it's totally free and works on iPad, IPod Touch and the iPhone. Dress Up Snow is brought to us by AppsNminded, the same folks who created the apps Beyonce vs, Rihanna: Who Wore It Better, Makeover: From Geek to Chic, PopStar Makeup! Teen Dream House, Zombie Girl: Halloween and I Heart Makeup!

The app has several vignettes and users can change Snow's gowns, accessories, hairstyles, (add a tiara or a crown) give her a candle, butterfly, goblet, bluebird, sword, crown, to hold. You can even give Snow a change of scenery: from various rooms in the castle to the grand ball to the birch forest and palace grounds.
Then you can save your creations in little snow globes! We played Dress Up Snow at the film's junket with Snow herself, actress Lily Collins, who exclaimed, "It's SO cool that I have an app!" She especially liked being able to see herself with different hairstyles.
Cooler still will be the opportunity for young girls to play with five of the gowns seen in the film that were designed by iconic Japanese designer Eiko Ishioka. She won an Oscar for her work on Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1994. Mirror Mirror director Tarkem Singh first arranged to work with her on his dream-like virtual reality thriller, The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez. Then came The Fall and Singh's most recent mythical epic, The Immortals.
When you see the film, you can appreciate her work more. The size of the gowns alone is staggering: The Evil Queen and Snow White’s gowns measure 5’8” to 6’ in circumference, were handmade from 25-35 yards of fabric, with huge wire cages and corsets underneath. The Queen’s piece de resistance wedding gown weighed a toppling 60 lbs and was 8 ft in diameter.
Sadly Ishioka died of pancreatic cancer on Jan. 21, 2012 at age 73. Sadder still, she never got to see the finished film, which wrapped in late 2011.
But we think she would love the fact that little girls around the world will now be able to play dress up on their iPads and iPhones with her costume creations.
