Another day, another Gatsby exhibit. Albeit with dazzling dresses, A-list celebs and the non-stop flow of Champagne, this one would have surely made Jay Gatsby proud.
Dubbed Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby, the Tuesday night soiree — held at Prada's Soho boutique — showcased 40 head-to-toe costumes that the the evening's headliners collaborated on for Baz Luhrmann's upcoming film.
Luhrmann and wife Martin, the film's costume and set designer, appeared at the cocktail party alongside Prada herself along with Gatsby stars Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher (the ladies were outfitted in either Prada or Miu Miu, naturally). Katy Perry, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Florence Welch, Jennifer Meyer, Alexa Chung and Vogue creative director Grace Coddington also were among the attendees.
The Prada-Martin collab is notable for its kismet origins: While launching into her latest partnership with hubby Luhrmann, Martin was seeking out some dresses to use while filming screen tests and ended up choosing several looks from the Prada and Miu Miu archives. The pieces proved so successful, Martin asked Prada to work with her on the film, largely by adapting dresses from Prada's respective spring and fall 2011 collections. Most of the 40 costumes displayed at the exhibit, which is open to the public through May 12th, are worn by extras in the film’s two main party sequences. Though one look — a crystal-beaded “chandelier dress” from Prada’s Spring 2010 line — is worn by Mulligan in a "key scene". The wide iconic staircase of the Rem Koolhaas-designed Prada store is ideal gallery for the exhibit, allowing viewers an up-close look at the intricate beading, embroideries, feather work and furs used in the costumes. Several suits designed by Brooks Brothers for the film are also paired with dresses on the store’s second level.
Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada Dress Gatsby is on display at Prada Soho (575 Broadway Ave., New York) through May 12th, then will head to Prada’s Tokyo boutique for display June 14-30 before its final stop at the label’s Shanghai boutique in mid-July.
Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby premieres in New York on Wednesday night at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.
