Naeem Khan is having an extremely good week. Just a few days after First Lady Michelle Obama donned his dress for the White House Correspondents' Dinner, he hosted an intimate dinner of his own at the Chateau Marmont in L.A.
Attending Tuesday night (and all looking tres chic in his designs) were young fashion-conscious actresses, I am Number Four star Teresa Palmer, Revenge's Ashley Madekwe, Fast and Furious' Jordana Brewster, Modern Family's Julie Bowen, Rizzoli and Isles detective Angie Harmon, The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, The Office's Ellie Kemper and Ahna O'Reilly of The Help.
Turns out the Indian-born designer was as surprised as everyone about the POTUS’ wife wearing his gown. He told reporters at the party, “I was here in L.A. and the next thing I see is these emails saying Michelle Obama is wearing Naeem Khan."
Well, in truth, he shouldn’t have been that surprised. After all, the First Lady first wore one of his elaborate designs -- an elegant strapless, floor-length, champagne-colored gown with silver detail – to an official State Dinner. Her hair was swept back and she wore traditional sparkly Indian bangle bracelets. Not coincidentally, the guests of honor that night were Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur.
According to Khan, the embroidered dress took 40 people more than three weeks to create in his family's plant in India.
Bowen, who wore Khan’s adorable ostrich feather mini-dress, had attended the WHCA Dinner and made small talk with Mrs. Obama about everything from her dog to her kids until she resorted to some real girl talk, asking her who made her gown. When the First Lady replied "Naeem Khan," she proceeded to talk about how much she loved his designs too.
What a small fashion world.
