Beauty News: Nails Are Hollywood's Hottest Accessory
From Zooey Deschanel's TV nail art to Rihanna's dollar bill manicure, bold and attention-grabbing nails are the latest way to stand out on the red carpet.
Statement-making nails are the new must-have fashion accessory on the red carpet.
At the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, New Girl nominee Zooey Deschanel made a cute and quirky statement with her nails, which were done by manicurist Tom Bachik. He combined soft yellow and peach shades (both from L'Oreal) and topped them with Swarovski crystals. For Deschanel's thumbs, Bachik hand painted retro televisions on them and filled in the TV screens with a glittery shade from L'Oreal called Sparklicious.
Modern Family's Sarah Hyland sported a new take on the classic French manicure by wearing a mauve base (Essie Miss Fancy Pants) and metallic lavender on the tips (Essie Nothing Else Metals) instead of the tradtional pale pink base with white tips.
Bachik also painted Ashley Judd's nails for the Emmys -- try to forget Judd's kooky bouffant and focus on her trendy mani -- in a modified French manicure with a deep taupe violet base (L'Oreal in Eiffel For You) and a silver sparkle shade on the tips (L'Oreal in Sparklicious). But this glitter was nothing compared to the jewels E! Fashion Police host Kelly Osbourne wore, with a quarter of a million dollars worth of diamonds on her digits. E! Live from the Red Carpet even debuted a "mani cam" for leading ladies to show off their manicures (and cocktail rings and bracelets) at the Emmys.
At the MTV Video Music Awards, an event known for outrageous looks, performers Pink and Rihanna extended their artistic expression onto their talons. For Pink, L.A.-based nail stylist Naja applied a custom Minx Nails pattern called Silver Lip. And on Rihanna, L.A. nail stylist Kimmie Kyees (who counts Katy Perry and Lady Gaga as clients), applied a Minx Nails design featuring images of 100 dollar bills and 50 pound notes.

15-year-old Ender's Game actress Hailee Steinfeld, picked an age -- and fall-appropriate deep emerald jewel tone when she hit the red carpet at New York's Fashion Week pre-parties -- Butter London's British Racing Green polish is a similar shade.
Even the First Lady has been painting outside the lines. Michelle Obama created a stylish stir when she attended the Democratic National Convention in a custom-made Tracy Reese dress that was complemented perfectly with grey-lilac nails, a gel shade from Artistic Nail Design called Vogue.
In other nail news, look for product launches from three unsuspecting polish designers: Oscar de la Renta has three pretty shades (plum, red and ice blue) inspired by his fall collection that will be sold exclusively on WhoWhatWear.com; Mariah Carey has collaborated with OPI to launch a line set for January 2013 (think Hello Kitty pink); and singer Fergie has teamed up with Wet N Wild to create 24 dark, neon and metallic shades that are available at drugstores now.
