New York Fashion Week: J. Crew Shows Preppy Pieces in Bold Geometric Prints
The Marrakech-inspired collection featured updated classics in bright colors, graphic prints and with a heavy dose of sparkle.
WHO: J. Crew
WHAT: Fall 2013 runway show New York
WHEN: February 12, 2013
THE FRONT ROW: Jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer Maguire, Mickey Drexler
THE MOOD/INSPIRATION: J. Crew opted to do a gallery style presentation instead of a traditional catwalk. Models with bold red lips and slightly undone up dos were dressed in a mix of classic daytime pieces (cropped pants, tailored blazers, knits, peacoats) in solids and eye-catching geometric prints. "During a trip to Marrakech last fall, I was so inspired by the rich, bold colors I saw in the markets as well as the graphic patterns," said Tom Mora, head of J. Crew women's design. "We created bold prints, used lush fabrics and intricate beading and applied them to our idea of classic American sportswear."
COLORS/FABRICS: Classic black, heather gray and ivory were mixed with bright blues (dark navy, cobalt, aqua) and pops of electric orange, petal pink, purple, red and yellow. Cool yet ladylike looks in metallic brocades, knits, tweed and felted wool. The royal blue and metallic orange brocade was particularly chic.
KEY TRENDS: Bold graphic prints. Skinny pants and slouchy pleated-front and drawstring trousers all ankle-length. Plenty of razzle-dazzle including a double-breasted camel day coat with a clear crystal-encrusted collar, bedazzled leather gloves, crystal shirt collars and sparkly shoulders on tops. Long leather gloves, oversized day clutches and the brand's statement costume jewels including multi-color bib necklaces and chandelier earrings.
RELEVANCE TO HOLLYWOOD: In addition to Michelle Obama, A-list actresses such as Reese Witherspoon and Katie Holmes love the brand's easy daytime separates for running around L.A. and New York.
RED CARPET WATCH: Not a lot of red carpet looks, but there was a standout glittering gold clutch with all-over crystals that we'd love to see someone carry.
