New York Fashion Week Spring 2013: Kate Spade Celebrates 20th Anniversary
The brand's creative director works with Hollywood stylist Brad Goreski once again for a confetti-colored collection filled with her favorite things.
Kate Spade creative director Deborah Lloyd was wearing pieces from the jaunty spring 2013 collection to talk to press during the brand's downtown presentation, which featured models standing on platforms in the mint green, orange whip, strawberry sundae, cobalt blue, and black and white looks that offered all the fun of Kate Spade: wide flared skirts, sweater sets--this time festooned with tiny bows--mini skirts, shorts, super fun, whimsical jewelry, and a new, bright little handbag in sorbet colors with bows as well.
"It's our 20 year anniversary," Lloyd told THR, "so you'll see our favorite things well placed throughout the collection. We're always about a pop of color, and we love the bow. There's also a touch of sixties with a Mondrian-inspired dress (the sixties were much in evidence at Marc Jacobs, too) - and a little bit of the eighties, because New York is always a little bit about the eighties. And then we did some gingham, because at Kate Spade, we love a picnic."
Hollywood stylist Brad Goreski (Jessica Alba), who's been working constantly with the brand, flew to New York to style the installation with a team, and also to start shooting some of the second season of his reality TV show, Bravo's It's a Brad, Brad World.
"I count on Brad to make it fresh and new," explained Lloyd. "He always knows what to bring to the party. He's part of the Kate Spade family now."
"If you see a really short skirt, you know it's me!" Goreski said laughing. And it's true, New York runways--and girls on the streets were sporting some very short dresses again, albeit with flats or flat sandals. "The shorter the skirt, the higher the hair, the closer to God," he mocked, using a very Southern sentiment of Texas girls. "I like that we did white nail polish with the looks, and even white shoes with pale pink socks."
"I do see girls in socks on the street," noted Goreski. "I love to put my celeb clients in a chunky sock." We're not sure we agree with this sentiment, but the jury is out . .
Goreski said now that the Spade spring show is behind him, his focus is on his TV show, and clients in L.A. doing photo shoots and Emmy fittings. "We've got a big week ahead," he sighed. "But it's sort of always a big week these days. The season is now upon us."
Lloyd and Goreski just returned from a trip together to Brazil, where Kate Spade opened a store in Rio. "We Kate Spade-ified the roof of a hotel for our event," Goreski said laughing. "Rio is now a little more colorful--if that's possible."
