Oscars 2012: Best Actress Nominee Viola Davis Talks Gowns
"I'm going to have fun with it," the actress tells THR of her Academy Awards ensemble, adding: "And I'm going to have fun IN it!"
Viola Davis has not only had a great awards season -- earning nominations for truly everything under the sun for her role as Abiliene in The Help -- but she's also had a great season in terms of fashion.
Working with stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who also works with the nominated best supporting actress Jessica Chastain (as well as Jennifer Lawrence, Amanda Seyfried,Cate Blanchett and many more), she's managed to upstage her look every time out on the red carpet. From her red Ralph Lauren shift at the NBR Awards to her pink metallic Ports dress at the New York Film Critics, she's really pulled out all the stops in terms of color and good shapes for her body. Her wine colored Pucci one shoulder Grecian gown at the Globes cound not have been more flattering. Then there was her Herve L. Leroux forest green gown at the recent Producers Guild Awards, which had a fluid assymetrical peplum. So now -- what about the Oscars?
"I'm having fun with the whole dress aspect of awards season this time out," the double Oscar nominee told The Hollywood Reporter the morning of the Oscar noms. "I've been known to get it wrong. I really did love my Golden Globe Pucci gown so much, I had so much fun in it. You've got to realize that I've never been 'The Dress Girl.' I lost the Miss Central Falls Rhode Island contest at age eight, and I thought that was proof positive that I would never be a girly girl. But I'm having fun. The stylists, hair and makeup team - now I get to dress up! Maybe I'm channeling something from the deep recesses of my unconscious!"
We looked into this season's archive, and it seems Davis has gone most often for two individual color families: red or wine tones, and shades of green. Both are quite flattering on her. Will we see more of these shades at the Oscars on Feb. 26, or something unexpected? We have a feeling it will something completely different -- and not the yellow shade she wore when she was nominated for Doubt.
"Whatever it is," she laughed, "I'm going to have fun with it -- and I'm going to have fun IN it!!"
