'The Artist' Dog Star Uggie Has Been Rehearsing an Oscar Skit With Host Billy Crystal (Exclusive)
But thanks to Martin Scorsese's impassioned appeal, Uggie must compete with "Hugo" Doberman star Blackie for a Golden Collar prior to the Academy Awards.
It’s official. Blackie, the canine star of Hugo, has received the 500 Facebook votes needed for her write-in nomination for a coveted Golden Collar Award. The ceremony will take place on Feb. 13, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel, honoring the canine stars of US and international films, TV shows and commercials.
And after Martin Scorsese's op-ed piece in the LA Times succeeded in securing his dobie actress a nomination, the director has also been invited to attend the ground-breaking awards. As you can imagine, the competition is pretty fierce. Top dog Uggie – nominated for two Golden Collars for his roles in The Artist and Water for Elephants -- is the front runner in the race that also includes Cosmo as Arthur in Beginners, Denver as Skeletor in 50/50, Hummer as Dolce in Young Adults.
Need we mention that Uggie already cornered mega-votes by showing up to announce these awards. It should be also be revealed that The Artist is a Harvey Weinstein film. Who says you can't teach an old awards season expert dog new tricks?
Yes, there will be dog porta-potties on the Golden Collar red carpet. But not those tacky bright red fire hydrants. Alan Siskind, editor of Dog News Daily, has arranged for more polite faux grass 4 by 4 pads to be laid down along the arrivals rug. Siskind has also been besieged by dog clothing companies offering to outfit the nominees in appropriate gowns and tuxedos. Maybe next year. As of press time, no water sponsors have come onboard. Save that for next year too. But there will be spring water served for the dog nominees. No bubbly. Sorry, pups. But you know how you get.
More human celebs are confirming even as we post, including several stars from the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and Modern Family, Chelsea Handler's show. Young Adult star Charlize Theron will be on hand to accept her Humanitarian Award and support her nominated canine co-star Hummer.
The GC Awards will be a short show. No long acceptance speechs. Woof, woof, treat and they're outta there. And no post party. But the Amanda Foundation, The Best Friends Animal Society, even the LA Police Canine Units will be hand, er, paw.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Uggie is officially retiring (hey, he's 10-years-old, fer crying out loud) from feature films this year. His brother Dash will appear at the Golden Collar Awards making his first big public appearance. Dash has been a stand-in for Uggie from time to time, but this is his first whoopdedo.
But our extremely deep throat sources reveal that Uggie is going out with a very loud bang. He's been busy this week rehearsing a very funny skit with Oscar host Billy Crystal. Oscar watchers will no doubt concur that Billy and Uggie are bound to have better chemistry than the 2011 hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco.
