The actress graces a 70 ft. billboard atop Madison Square Garden, just in time for the New York Fashion Week. Cruz, 37, gazes at the camera over her shoulder with a come-hither look and the tag-line: "Give fur the cold shoulder."

PETA's Yvonne Taylor, says: "Penelope Cruz has appeared on every 'best-dressed' list in the world, and the one thing you'll never see her wearing is fur."

She adds: "One couldn't ask for a more fitting emblem of the modern, glamorous woman who knows that there's nothing more beautiful than a woman who has a look that kills without anyone having to die for it."

Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem, have rescued many cats and dogs from adoption shelters, and she has frequently turned up at press junkets and interviews with one of her four-legged friends.

During her early days in Hollywood, cats saved the young actress from loneliness."I would find cats in the street and take them with me," she confessed in a Vogue interview. "I raised a lot of cats in that period."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star now joins a list of female celebrities, including First Lady Michelle Obama, Eva Mendez, Olivia Munn, and the French Prime Minister's wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, to speak out wearing fur.
