After 17 seasons as a judge on America’s Next Top Model, Nigel Barker is set to become a host. The British photographer, author, filmmaker and former model works alongside supermodel coaches Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha on Oxygen’s The Face, premiering Tuesday, as they mentor hopefuls into modeling and branding careers. Immersed in the world of fashion since his early days as a model, the father of two is more interested in family than fashion. “I never shop for myself, but I do shop for my wife on a regular basis,” he says. “For her, I like Christian Louboutin heels, Wolford hosiery, Vince cashmere, Catherine Malandrino, Calypso, Intermix, Scoop, Theory, Helmut Lang and of course Pamella Roland for special events.”
I have a long history with Ted Baker of London, who dressed me on America's Next Top Model and whose campaigns I have shot for the U.S. You'll see me “Ted-to-toe” quite often. More recently, on The Face, I have been wearing a smorgasbord of designers and mixing and matching to get the exact look I want. My go-to designers are Hugo Boss for shirts, Levis for jeans, Paul Smith for socks and ties, Tods for shoes, Vince for sweaters, James Perse for T-shirts and John Varvatos and Dolce & Gabbana for suits. Oh … and Calvin Klein for boxers.
FAVORITE RECENT PURCHASE:
A Sony RX-1 compact camera, which is the ultimate all-in-one camera with a fixed Zeiss lens … It makes other photographers drool.
FAVORITE UNDER-THE-RADAR STORE:
Duncan Quinn is a British tailor based in the East Village in a tiny little store where I get one bespoke suit a year made for trade with my photos!
I always bring a framed picture of my wife and kids to personalize the room upon checking in. I like cashmere, and a cashmere blanket is better than any dodgy duvet the airlines might give you, and I like Berocca vitamin B effervescent tablets for energy and health.
Who, me? Well, you can never be too careful. Sometimes after a long flight, the paparazzi like to stalk the airport and catch you right off a red-eye … I always pack sunglasses, no matter the weather.
FAVORITE RED CARPET MOMENT:
As a photographer, my favorite red carpet moments are when the red carpet shooters want a shot with me, not just of me. They are my kin, so it's extra special!
