Pre-SAG Weekend Fashion: Bright Florals and Prints Versus Black Lace
How do actresses separate SAG weekend-style dresses from dresses revolving around the Globes or the Oscars? Fash Track gives you several examples.
Traditionally, the Screen Actors' Guild Awards -- and their surrounding soirees -- have a more low-key feel than the oft-fashiony Globes and classically traditional Oscars. But this year, the Globes were remarkably low key, with virtually no surprises: We saw a lot of red/orange tones, open backs and strapless fishtail looks. So we're putting a lot of hope on the SAGs, and the events of the weekend leading up to Sunday's SAG Awards -- and we did find some pockets of interest sure to spring some trends for eveningwear in the future.
At some of the pre-SAG parties, both Michelle Dockery and Nina Dobrev went very colorful, but not pastel -- they mixed brights with black, as putting all bright tones together in January would look very a-seasonal. Dockery wore British designer Peter Pilotto's spring 2013 multi-colored halter sheath with a modern painterly print mixing red, turquoise and grey onto a black background -- and paired it with red lips and red heels to really give the look some kick. Since Dockery tends to play it down, this was a big statement -- a tight body-hugging dress -- but with a strong fashion element of a bright modern print. We hope she brings some similar fashion pizzazz to the SAGs on Sunday night.
The ever-fashionable Dobrev donned a Matthew Williamson resort 2013 strapless gown that also mixed brights -- violet and yellow -- with black, for a winter-meets-spring kind of floral -- and Williamson is, of course, famous for his prints. Two great examples of how prints and colors can still look the part in January -- and still be very classy.
