[Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Thursday's episode.]
Toot, toot -- beep, beep! The '70s are back when the all-stars are challenged to create show-stopping, disco party wear inspired by Nine West shoes. To sweeten the deal, the winner’s design will be featured in a Nine West fall ad campaign. Cue the mirror ball!
In the Workroom
Joanna Coles delivered some of the best one-liners this week, including “I think of the '70s as the decade that taste forgot.” Hilarious! Can you imagine Joanna getting her boogie on at the disco?!
Across the workroom, Andrae’s organza obsession has him scrambling to finish, yet again. Wendy’s design tests Joshua’s gag reflex of taste, while Uli gets frosty about Suede’s golden refrigerator.
Then there was Kayne’s impromptu disco dance break. Talk about cheesy! But a special message from Karl Lagerfeld helped end the designers’ day on a high note.
The next day, Casanova proves he’s an all-star assistant when he helps Ivy finish her look. Anthony Ryan doesn’t approve and starts to doubt Ivy’s place in the competition.
On the Runway
Creative director of Nine West handbags, Rafe Totengco, joins the panel as this week’s guest judge. Then it’s show time! Here’s what I thought about the looks:
Emilio: Call me crazy, but I just don’t see disco here. The gown had beautiful movement and drama, but seemed like it was more black-tie than party wear.
Wendy: She hit the disco nail on the head then just kept on hammering. The gloves, the chains, the bag -- it was just too much! Not a fan of the prints or fabrics she chose either.
Anthony Ryan: It’s a cute, color-blocked cocktail dress in black and gold. This look is definitely wearable and ready for a party. I just wish he would have been more ambitious.
Casanova: This fuchsia stunner is simple but still special. Love the color and silhouette and thought he was smart to apply the bias technique in the back.
Suede: His model was dipped in glue and attacked by gold fabric … turn off the music.
Andrae: These were just clothes to me, not fashion. The halter top and skirt were too simple and his organza coat was sloppy. The styling was the best part about his look.
Ivy: Her pairing of emerald and gold worked. I agreed with the judges that the dress would have been better if the embellishment continued on the back, though.
Uli: Fun, flirty and fringed. It’s a relatively simple design but the details and white color choice made this dress stand out. But where’s the disco? Are sequins ‘70s enough…?
Joshua: Love the color and proportion of this turquoise ensemble, but the silhouette reminded me a lot of his episode one design. Aside from the back cutout, this look seemed very office to me.
Laura Kathleen: I saw a little Michael Costello in this printed jumpsuit. There was definitely a nod to the ‘70s in this look without being too literal. Nicely done!
Althea: The bodice of this little cocktail dress seemed a little tortured. I didn’t understand the strips of fabric in the back either. This is supposed to be ‘70s?
Kayne: Kudos to Kayne for lining up his chevrons but he spent so much time on those palazzo pants that his top was pretty unremarkable. Too much J.Lo; not enough disco.
The Judges’ Decisions
In the end, Uli was named the winner, while Wendy was out.
I actually thought Casanova’s design addressed the challenge better than Uli and Ivy’s looks, but I can understand why Nine West would want to feature Uli’s dress in their campaign. Congrats to Uli! Looking forward to seeing the ad.
Wendy bowed out gracefully and I respect her for that. Good luck to her! Andrae really dodged another bullet this week. If he tries to design another organza coat, I think he’ll be in trouble.
