Reese Witherspoon returned to Los Angeles wearing an Atlanta police hat -- a reference to her April 19 arrest for disorderly conduct in the Southern city.
But what was she trying to say exactly? After landing at LAX on Saturday, the actress -- no doubt aware that she would be photographed -- looked sporty-casual in jeans, a gray sweater and the navy hat emblazoned with the seal of the Atlanta police. See the photo at Vulture, which translates Witherspoon's message thusly: "I'm done apologizing, f--- you." We think it was less "f--- you" than "I love police officers! I am still America's Sweetheart! Love me, love me, love me!"
Or something like that.
Last Thursday, Witherspoon pled no contest to physical obstruction for disobeying an officer's order to stay in the car after her husband, CAA agent Jim Toth, was pulled over for a DUI. The same day, she appeared on ABC's Good Morning America to promote her latest film, Mud, but of course, the news of her arrest dominated much of her sit-down with George Stephanopoulos.
"I have no idea what I was saying that night. I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked," she said. "And I said all kinds of crazy things. I told him I was pregnant -- I'm not pregnant!"
Soon after her GMA mea culpa, footage of the incident surfaced online, showing Witherspoon's outburst in action and also Toth complaining that instead of staying silent and letting him get arrested, she had "turned it into national news."
Despite the negative press, Witherspoon's career doesn't seem to have suffered for it. As previously reported, the star is in talks to join Keanu Reeves in the sci-fi love story Passengers.
