Prince William Says the Queen Told Him to 'Get Rid' of First Wedding Guest List

Turns out she's not such a stickler for palace protocol.

Imagine Kate Middleton and Prince William’s horror when they were handed a list of people to invite to their 2011 wedding with 777 names on it.

And not a single person was someone they knew.

Credit for saving Will and Kate's royal wedding  -- which was watched by millions around the world -- goes to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

One might naturally assume that the 86-year-old royal, who ascended the throne when she was only 25, would be a real stickler for palace protocol.

Not so much. In fact, it was she who advised her grandson to rip up the official guest list and make a new one adding the names of the couple's friends.

In extracts from an interview for an ITV documentary about the 2012 Queen's Jubilee, William revealed his granny's intervention.

"I went to her (the Queen) and said, 'Listen, I've got this list, not one person I know -- what do I do?' and she went, 'Get rid of it. Start from your friends and then we'll add those we need to in due course. It's your day,'" he said.

Despite the inclusion of their friends, Prince William admitted that he got just half an hour's sleep the night before the big event. To that confession we have just one thing to say: That much?

William, second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles, admitted that he’s immensely grateful for his grandmother's advice and experience. "She's an incredible role model. I would like to take all of her experiences, all of her knowledge and put it in a small box and to be able to constantly refer to it."

And his relationship with the Queen is much closer now that he’s older. "Being a small boy it's very daunting seeing the Queen around and not really quite knowing what to talk about," he said.

We can well imagine.
