There are two ways to go at any genre of MTV Awards: over the top or unnoticed.
Subtle gets you nowhere -- not if Rihanna and Beyonce are in the house -- and mini lengths and cleavage get the most flashbulb attention. But in the case of the MTV European Music Awards this weekend, host Heidi Klum really went over the top. Her Versace gowns and dresses -- in screaming colors and patterns and leaving much skin exposed -- were more appropriate for the circus. The internet is rife with rough words about the Project Runway star and all of her looks.
Still, she did get plenty of attention.
Meanwhile, two stylish regulars managed to fly slightly under the radar and still look great. Taylor Swift, in a dove grey open work J. Mendel fall 2012 gown, looked lovely and subtle and sweet -- and still fairly sexy. She's been wearing J. Mendel almost exclusively for months, showing the chic good taste and style of women twice her age.
Alicia Keys wore one of Stella McCartney's illusion dresses -- where the body of the dress looks painted on to sheer fabric on the side and top, making the wearer appear to have the body of Jessica Rabbit. In Keys' case, the dress is dark green. Because her hair is bobbed and sleek, she looks really modern. We're seeing this McCartney look a lot on stars but, finally, it turned up at the right event.
It's all about context.
The 31-year-old superstar worked the red carpet in one of Stella McCartney's wildly popular "Miracle" dresses. The bodycon frocks have been seen on a slew of celebs and we're really digging Alicia's green and black version of the flattering design, which she paired with Gianvito Rossi pumps and a Repossi necklace.
However, while the illusion panel along the side of the dress leaves little to the imagination, the sheer detailing at the shoulders has us wondering, what's going on? Sadly the material is too light for Alicia's skin tone, so it looks like her bra straps are showing. As we all know, the color "nude" isn't universal leading to many mismatched messes. However, we think this was a minor hiccup in an otherwise sensational look.
