Summer Cashmere is Suddenly Hollywood's Hottest Number
Who says wool is just for winter on cool L.A. nights?
January Jones has been sporting cashmere cardigans around town since she was pregnant. Emma Roberts has several styles, including a long stretchy cashmere coat-cardigan we've been secretly admiring. Kim Kardashian matches her thin cashmere sweaters and hoodies with either cashmere sweatpants or thin summer dresses.
Thin cashmere is the perfect weight for L.A. summer nights, when there's always a little chill, and even summer mornings in L.A. require "wrappage."
Souchi cashmere -- which rhymes with "sushi" and is the nickname of the cashmere line's creator, Suzi Johnson, from San Francisco -- has become ubiquitous with Hollywood stars because of its natural colors and very, very thin fine texture. It's not that bulky East Coast style cashmere; it's thin like a Michael Stars or James Perse T-shirt. We understand Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter and Hilary Duff are ordering multiples and saving some for winter layering. Entourage's Perrey Reeves, Kristin Cavallari, Stephanie Pratt, Katrina Begin and Cassie Scerbo has also been photographed wearing the brand.
Other cashmere brands doing brisk summer business include old standbys Malo, TSE, Loro Piano, and newer lines like Jen Kao, sold at Satine, are being worn in t-shirt or tank form by day, cardigan form by night.
Lightweight cashmere cardigans have become a Hollywood hit for a few reasons. First, they are the ultimate in seemingly preppy items, but on the body, they look soft and sexy and textural. They are quiet luxury; they whisper, "Touch me." A hoodie in thin cashmere makes them instant luxe items, gives them an upgrade deluxe from sweatshirt cottons and jerseys. Isn't that the ultimate status piece -- something that looks old, grandfathered and worn, but is actually a luxury fabric? Many pieces run more in the $300-$400 range compared to the thicker cashmeres you can find at Burberry or Barneys, which start in the $1,000 range.
Souchi — which makes not just cardis and hoodies but also sports tank dresses in pale cashmere colors, skirts and leggings — has stores of its own in Portland, Oregon, and in Basalt and Aspen, Colorado, and will be opening soon in San Francisco. Hopefully, L.A. will follow, since the fabric weight is perfectly West Coast.
