Versace's Fall 2012 Collection: Can Hollywood Wear These Flimsy Looks?
Donatella Versace presented a sheer-on-sheer couture collection in Paris this week, but actresses might come off like porn stars in some of these looks.
Donatella Versace is known for making some of the world's sexiest gowns, for some of the world's sexiest women -- including Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie and Madonna. But, as we learned at the 2012 Oscars, there is such a thing as "too sexy" -- Angelina's "leg gown" by Atelier Versace Haute Couture got more snark from comedians than positive fashion press. And the looks Donatella showed in Paris this week at her couture show were about as barely-there as it gets: semi-sheers, looking like babydoll nightgowns, or mini nighties with trains, were all over her fall couture runway. They looked great on the models -- but actresses would come off like porn stars in some of these looks. Unless the female version of Magic Mike is in the works, these dresses better not leave home without linings.
And the fact is, many couture gowns show up on the Hollywood landscape longer, less sheer, more opaque, lined or in thicker fabrics -- because put a kleig light anywhere near these dresses and they could go up in either literal flames, or flames of passion (which is the desired result in the right context) as well as look more like lampshades in a bordello than dresses. But there were a few semi-strapless gowns that could come as they are -- even though they have "burnout" bits running through them -- what look like runs in stockings -- going through the dresses, showing revealing bits of skin. When Angelina decides to wear a dress like one of these two -- and blue is the hot gown color for fall -- you can make sure they will have less fissures.
We like the colors there and the tiny little not-exactly-spaghetti-straps, more like angel hair straps, holding these dresses up at Versace couture. Now, they won't be making an appearance at the Emmys -- couture gowns don't go to a lot of TV actresses -- but somebody will snatch one of these babies up for the Venice Film Festival at the end of August. As for the rest of the gowns -- they need a lot more fabric before they make appearances on anyone, other than Blake Lively.
