It isn't called Verge for nothing. Verge is the brainchild of WireImage's Jeff Vespa, a regular photog at every major Hollywood entertainment business event (as well as almost every major film festival), and the official photographer at The Sundance Film Festival. Vespa also is a producer on the 2012 documentary film Sellebrity (directed by Kevin Mazur, a fellow WireImage photographer), and he's also a visual artist with many gallery shows to his credit. Verge is a way for him to merge his interest in acting and breakout stars with his visual skills. Clearly, the guy never stops working.
Verge will have a big fashion element as well, as it will incorporate new looks and full fashion spreads into its multimedia experience. And they're obviously serious about fashion. Celebrity stylist and fashion editor Elizabeth Stewart (who has worked with Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Amanda Seyfried, and Viola Davis), who's been with W Magazine in Paris and the New York Times Magazine, is Verge's fashion director. This certainly promises it will be chock-full of great designers' collections, as Stewart is nothing if not well connected. Verge's editorial director is James Patrick Herman, who's been with Glamour, Elle and Spin, among other publications. It's pretty rare for a digital magazine to have original fashion shoots, so this is something to look out for.
There will be two new feature stories a week focusing on new talent -- so this will be a good place for magazine editors and casting directors to check in. Each story will have an accompanying photo shoot, a written article -- and get this -- a short film. The readers it's geared toward are in the entertainment industry, but also members of the general public who like to keep up on upcoming talent.
FYI, it can be found at www.Ver-ge.com (with a prominent and unexpected dash in there). The magazine's Sundance cover is of Amy Seimetz, an actress and writer who has appeared in a number of indie films, and who will be at Sundance next week. The Verge List of Sundance breakouts includes names like Alex Shaffer (The Lifeguard), Ambyr Childers (We Are What We Are), Jonathan Groff (C.O.G.) and Nick Robinson (Toy House), among others. The Verge List: Sundance 2013 Party will be held Jan. 20 at the Village at the Lift in Park City, Utah.
