Inside Hollywood's Surprise Trip to China's Huading Awards
Quentin Tarantino, Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage mingled with Chinese talent at the country's Oscars-like event -- yet another example of the Asian industry's growing global sway.

Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan and Nicole Kidman arrive on the red carpet at Sheldon Adelson's Venetian Macao Casino. Kidman was honored at the event with the "best global actress in motion pictures" award. During her acceptance speech later in the night, Kidman, who was in China just weeks ago promoting the country's $8.2 billion film studio development in Qingdao, said she hopes to come back and make a film in China soon.

Cage flew in for the event from central China, where he is filming Nick Powell’s Outcast with Hayden Christensen. After the event, he told THR that he enjoys China so much that he hopes to soon move to Hong Kong. "I have to take my wife there first and show her Hong Kong. And hopefully she will agree with me. I think she will. That's where I want to live."

Tarantino, who received the best global director in motion pictures award, said in his acceptance speech: "I grew up watching the films of Shaw Brothers Studio and Golden Harvest. I have so much love for your cinema. All my life, Wang Yu, Chang Cheh, Fu Sheng were my heroes and that was the kind of cinema I wanted to do."

"I think we're all aware that China is an enormous market," Jeremy Irons told THR backstage after receiving his lifetime achievement trophy. "And now with its growth and its strengths, I think it's in everybody's interest to take note. It was an easy decision to come."

Matthew Perry was honored with a hand print ceremony and later took home the Huading award for best global actor in a TV series. "It's a whole different world, but they are very talented people," he said backstage. "Did you see the clips of the actors? They are way more talented than we are."

Avril Lavigne, who has a massive following in China, performed her hits "Girlfriend" and "Here's to Never Growing Up," after receiving the best global singer award.

Michelle Dockery
Michelle Dockery won Huading's best global TV actress honor. "For us on [Downton Abbey], it's wonderful the show is being recognized in so many countries," she said at a small gathering after the event. "These awards are as important as any other."
