MTV VMAs: Music's Biggest Stars Hit the Red Carpet

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift was stunning in a dress by Herve Leger, earrings and bracelets by Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira, and Prada shoes. She finished off the look with a clutch by Smythson. Swift took home the best female video award for "I Knew You Were Trouble."  "Now I get one of these," she said while proudly displaying her Moonman. Swift, who was seated next to pal Selena Gomez for the entire show, was clearly enjoying herself, singing along to every song. 

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is a vision in Versace. The VMA winner took home a Moonman for best pop video. Of her win, Gomez told reporters: "I remember actually watching some of my idols get this award so I'm pretty stoked. I didn't think I was going to win, to be honest. I really didn't. I think Robin Thicke should've won."

Katy Perry

The pop singer put the "roar" factor in her cheetah-print dress as she arrived early on the red carpet to pose for pictures with fans. The star later took over the Brooklyn Bridge for a performance dressed in different attire: boxing shorts!

Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo

Definitely one of the cutest couples on the red carpet, Jordin Sparks and Jason Derurlo looked perfectly coordinated in a black-and-white motif: but it almost didn't turn out that way. "This was super last minute, and it kind of happened on its own," Sparks told THR. "I had a dress I was going to wear, and it completely didn't work. I had a malfunction." Sparks wound up wearing white: the color of a bride-to-be, perhaps? Derulo was promoting the launch of his new single, "Marry Me," which was inspired by Sparks, but was it a proposal? Not yet, but Derulo said that it's about that feeling of how he may be persuaded to "get down on one knee."

Naya Rivera and Big Sean

Glee star Naya Rivera and Big Sean arrived arm-in-arm, and in matching black ensembles, for the show.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt strikes a pose on the VMA red carpet. The film star was on hand to present Justin Timberlake with the Moonman for video of the year. The actor was at promoting his new movie, Don Jon, which he also wrote and directed. A trailer for the film debuted during the broadcast. 

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson, perfectly styled in Dior, was among the highlights of the evening, joining Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for a touching performance of "Same Love." "It was incredible," said Lewis, who revealed that the Oscar winner was their top choice for what would become the most intimate moment of the show. "Jennifer Hudson has hands down one of the best, amazing live voices." Hudson's career is running hot. She will join fellow American Idol alum Jordin Sparks in the new movie, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. Says Sparks of Hudson's role: "It's very dramatic and completely out of the norm [for her]. She plays a single mother on crack. It's super crazy and very beautiful, but touching, so bring the tissues."

Ashanti

Ashanti arrived fashionably late, but perfectly in style in the color of the season: sea foam green. The singer worked the red carpet in a high slit gown by Michael Castillo and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. The singer cut it close -- she was still on the carpet posing for pictures and signing autographs for fans shortly before Lady Gaga opened the show.

Busta Rhymes and Lady Gaga

The "Applause" singer, who decided to go conservative in a black dress, hit the red carpet with the rapper, who is currently working on a video for his new song, "I Wanna Thank You." Gaga, who escorted her father, Joe Germanotta, on her arm, stripped down to a much skimpier G-string and bikini adorned with sea shells during her show-opening performance.

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding spiked up her dress as she posed on the red carpet. The "Anything Could Happen" singer was up for best collaboration with Calvin Harris for "I Need Your Love."

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton

The "Blurred Lines" singer attended the Sunday night awards show with his actress wife. During the show, Thicke took the stage with "We Can't Stop" singer Miley Cyrus.

Austin Mahone

The YouTube sensation performed "What About Love?" while dressed in an all-leather outfit. Four hours before the show, Mahone tweeted, "I'm ready this is the moment I've been waiting for." Backstage after the show, the MTV Artist to Watch winner told The Hollywood Reporter that he had "the best day ever."

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus donned a bejeweled, vintage Dolce & Gabbana ensemble with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and towering black peep-toe Mary Janes. Later that night she performed her hit single "We Can't Stop" alongside Robin Thicke. Backstage at the VMAs, Austin Mahone called the performance "pretty creative," while Selena Gomez praised the fellow Disney alum's production, calling it "amazing."

Wiz Khalifa

Wiz Khalifa rocks a leather jacket and jeans.

Ariana Grande

Grande appeared on the red carpet in a floral print dress designed by Project Runway alum Kenley Collins. Grande performed her hit single "The Way" at the VMA preshow earlier in the evening.

2 Chainz

The rapper, who is nominated with A$AP Rocky feat. Drake and Kendrick Lamar for “F---in Problems," walked the red carpet.

Coco Rocha

Arriving to the music award in an all-black ensemble was The Face mentor Coco Rocha.

Danity Kane

The girl group Danity Kane, dressed in black and white, reunited for a red carpet appearance. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the group was excited to return to the Video Music Awards. "This is where it all started for us," said the girl group.

Ed Sheeran

The English singer-songwriter arrived to this year's show, where his song "Lego House" is nominated for best male video.

Erin Wasson

American model Erin Wasson looked fierce in a sheer black number styled by Alexander Vauthier.  "He is the gangster of haute couture Paris," she said of her ensemble. Wasson is set to join Rihanna on her Styled to Rock fashion design competition show in the fall. "It combines Rihanna's spirit, Pharrell's prophesies and my bullshit," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Fifth Harmony

The X Factor contestants smiled for the the cameras as they arrived at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. The girls celebrated their first VMAs with the debut of their slumber-party-themed video "Me and My Girls." The adorable quintet were excited to see all the performances, and were hoping to catch up with one act in particular: One Direction. "They were so nice to us when they were on the show," they said. 

Future and Ciara

Rapper Future walked hand-in-hand with his girlfriend Ciara. Future was on his own talking to The Hollywood Reporter as he patiently waited for his date, who was busy doing "interview after interview." Future revealed the photogenic couple didn't coordinate their outfits for the show, but was confident they both looked "fly together." 

Grimes

The Canadian artist wore her round Stunna shades on the carpet. Grimes chose a pair of Versace menswear pants for the occasion, creating a red carpet "who wore it best?" moment, as rapper 2 Chainz donned the same design.

The Jersey Shore reality star arrived to Brooklyn in a classy-looking gown.

Kendrick Lamar

The "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe" rapper took the took to the red carpet at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the Sunday night awards show.

Miriam and Olivia Nervo

The Nervo twins, the Australian musical duo, had the daunting responsibility of DJing the VMA preshow alongside performances by Ariana Grande and Austin Mahone.

Richard Simmons and Katy Perry

Richard Simmons must be a fan of Perry's new hit single, "Roar." While on the red carpet at the Brooklyn-based awards show, the aerobics guru showed his appreciation to the "Last Friday Night" singer.

The ever-positive fitness personality arrived at the VMAs wearing lime green leggings and an orange tank top emblazoned with a bedazzled hummingbird. 

Riff Raff

Horst Christian Simco (better known by his stage name Riff Raff) arrived on the VMA red carpet in an eclectic ensemble that included snake-skin-patterned pants "from the Everglades," a taupe pashmina, oversized Gucci shades, pink high-tops and his signature cornrows. "I make my own lane," the rapper told The Hollywood Reporter. "I do it my way."

Rita Ora

The "How We Do" singer walked the VMA red carpet with a decadent, feathered Alexandre Vauthier couture gown.

Becky G

Dr. Luke protege Becky G opted for a fun, urban look to the red carpet, complete with the message that she "'Aint No Wifey." "There is more of an urban feel to the awards show this year, so I definitely went more urban, girly today," said the 15-year-old artist, who has already written with Cher Lloyd and Pitbull. "I wanted to show who I am as an artist. My music is urban pop." She had a hand in selecting her style, she said, going with a red stars ensemble to match the red carpet. "I just felt it was a nice little mix."

Sammi 'Sweetheart' Giancola and Ronnie Magro

Jersey Shore alums Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola and Ronnie Magro make the scene on the Brooklyn red carpet. So who took the longest to get ready for the big event? Would you believe Magro? "I take a really long time, but he's also a diva," said Giancola of her man. All seemed calm for the Jersey Shore couple, who said they purposely didn't coordinate their outfits this time around. "We wanted to be different," said Magro.

Snooki stuns with red hair and a low-cut black dress while fiance Jionni LaValle opts for a more casual look.
