The Big Screen's Evolution of Talking Animals
5:01 PM PDT 7/14/2011 by Pamela McClintock, Chris Godley
You’ve come a long way, Mr. Ed. The advent of the CGI/live-action hybrid has allowed Hollywood to make all the talking animal movies it wants. Done right, they can be wildly popular. Done wrong, they are ridiculed as the lowest common denominator. The latest effort is Kevin James starrer Zookeeper, which opened to a muted $20.1 million at the domestic box office. MGM and Sony better hope for a strong multiple, and brisk business overseas, if they are to recoup the pic’s $80 million production budget (excluding marketing costs). Zookeeper is rolling out slowly internationally, but scored a pleasing $7.5 million as it opened in a handful of markets, including Germany and Mexico. Here’s a look at how other talking animal pics have fared worldwide.
