'The Avengers' at D23: Cobie Smulders Reveals the Scene that Made her Sweat (Video)
One of the few female cast members says she relates to her character, Maria Hill, as a woman who tries to do it all.
Cobie Smulders may not be a superhero in real life, but she understands how her character in The Avengers is trying to do it all.
Smulders plays Maria Hill in Marvel’s highly-anticipated film. Hill is the right-hand woman of S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the director of the super-spy agency.
“I can relate to her being a mom and being a business woman and trying to work full time and raising a family and having a career. We’re asked to do a lot of things these days. I feel she is just all about her job and keeping things going,” said Smulders in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at Disney’s D23 Expo.
The Canadian actress says she trained for her role as Maria Hill by boxing four times a week and learning about guns from an expert. With a cast featuring Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo, there was no shortage of star power on set.

“I was very excited to meet and work with Robert Downey because I think he’s amazing,” said Smulders, who attended the expo to present new footage from the film to fans and the media. “And it was cool being with Sammy J. too just because I knew we’d be working together all time.”
Smulders, best know for her role on How I Met Your Mother, worked closely Jackson, who did not attend the D23 Expo, on many scenes, and told THR about one sweat-inducing work out at a top-secret location.

“It was this very high-security place. We were shooting in this crazy dome. It was the biggest air-sealed vacuum in the world,” said Smulders. “Sam and I were climbing up these steps. We had to go up all these flight of stairs. By the end of it we were just drenched.”
