'Avengers: Infinity War' May Introduce a Much-Anticipated Hero, Directors Tease
Fresh off introducing both Black Panther and the new Spider-Man to audiences in Captain America: Civil War, the Russo brothers might be introducing another long-awaited fan favorite to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War.
Talking to Yahoo Movies, Joe and Anthony Russo teased that the third outing for Earth's Mightiest Heroes could add yet more superheroes to Marvel's already busy roster, with Anthony saying that, although the directors have their "hands full trying to tell the story we have with our pre-existing characters … that's not to say we're not going to introduce a new character."
Don't go speculating on any entirely unexpected choices, however — will anything ever match the surprise of the Howard the Duck cameo at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy? — because it's possible the Russos are teasing Brie Larson's debut as Captain Marvel. Asked by Yahoo about that likelihood, Anthony initially joked, "If they ever cast that role, maybe," before saying, "That's one we're going to have to plead the Fifth on."
This isn't to say that Larson, if she does appear in the movie, will definitely play Captain Marvel, per se — after all, the comic book character was around for nine years as nonpowered U.S. Air Force Officer Carol Danvers before she became a superhero in her own right. Who's to say that the cinematic version won't also get her to prove her worth as a hero before she even gets her own supersuit? We do, after all, know that the writers of her 2019 solo movie are grappling with her origin story.
If Larson does debut in Infinity War, it'll be a case of delayed gratification for former Avengers director Joss Whedon. Following the release of 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, he shared that he had tried to introduce Captain Marvel at the end of that movie, only to be rebuffed by Marvel.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released May 4, 2018.
