25 Years Later, 'Bloom County' Returns to Print With 'A New Hope' (Exclusive Trailer)
It's been a quarter of a century, but next month sees the long-awaited return of Berkeley Breathed's Bloom County to print in IDW Publishing's Bloom County Episode XI: A New Hope — and if that title sounds like something found in a galaxy far, far away, wait until you see the trailer.
The 144-page paperback collects the brand-new strips created by Breathed since Bloom County's surprise return last year from its extended "hiatus," none of which have previously appeared in print before.
The original run of Bloom County ended in 1989, with Breathed immediately following it with the Sunday-only strip Outland, which featured many Bloom County characters. After that strip ended in 1995, Breathed took a break from newspaper cartooning until returning with Opus, which centered on the fan-favorite penguin from Bloom County and ran from 2003-2008.
Talking to Heat Vision about his return to the strip, which reappeared with little warning on Facebook in July last year, Breathed was suitably tongue-in-cheek. "At this moment in life I was absolutely supposed to be in the Old Cartoonist Nursing Home in Albuquerque playing for vodka shots with Gary Larson and Bill Watterson, competing to see who could make the nurses pretend to laugh with our sketches," he said, referring to the creators of The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes, respectively. "As God is my witness, I don't know what the &@#% happened."
Bloom County: Episode XI: A New Hope will be released Sept. 13.
