'Coraline' Vet Launches Kickstarter for 'Calliope Jackalope' Stop-Motion Film
A new crowdfunding campaign intends to bring a cult character to life for the first time, with Calliope Jackalope — a figure best known as a toy created by Kathie Olivas and Brandt Peters — getting her own stop-motion animated movie to launch Circus Posterus' new film production arm.
The Kickstarter campaign, which launches today, will fund Calliope, a 10-minute short directed by Olivas, Peters and Coraline's Martin Meunier, with Jon Schnepp, director of the animated series Metalopocalypse and the Kickstarter-funded The Death of Superman Lives, acting as executive producer for the project.
Described as "a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure about an otherworldly girl," the short will be created in part by animators, modelers and fabricators from Tim Burton's 1993 stop-motion classic The Nightmare Before Christmas.
"Kathie and I have both been creating toys and art for two decades, and Calliope is our first-ever film," Peters told The Hollywood Reporter. "The team of filmmakers, visual artists and fabricators we get to work with is epic. Working with Martin Meunier, who worked on The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Jon Schnepp is inspiring."
Multiple rewards will be available to those backing the campaign, including new Circus Posterus toys, replica spirit boards and tarot decks similar to those used by Calliope in the film and an exclusive comic book by Olivas, Peters, Schnepp and artist Dennis Cornetta.
"Calliope gives readings to the only people left on earth after the apocalypse, who are all children, using special cards all based on Brandt's popular toys," Olivas explained. "It'll be very eerie when his characters come to life from the cards and wreak havoc on the world. I can't wait to see her fully animated — or to craft the moment that the audience figures out she is Pestilence, one of the four horseman of the apocalypse."
