'Charlie St. Cloud' Director to Adapt Horror Novel 'Breed' for Summit
Summit Entertainment has picked up the movie rights to Breed, a horror novel by Chase Novak aka Scott Spencer, the author of Endless Love.
Burr Steers, known for directing the Zac Efron vehicles Charlie St, Cloud and 17 Again, will adapt and direct.
David Heyman, who produced the Harry Potter movies, will produce with his Heyday Films partner Jeffrey Clifford.
The book tells of a couple who undergo an experimental fertility treatment that turns them into bloodthirsty savages, leading them on a desperate quest to find a cure. The novel first details their search for the ability to produce offspring. It then jumps 10 years into the future in which their twins slowly discover there is something seriously off with their parents and run away from home, initiating a frantic and dangerous search.
The book was published in September. Mulholland Books put a sequel novel in the works before the first book hit the streets.
Spencer is the veteran author behind more dramatic books such as Endless Love and Waking the Dead, both of which have been adapted by Hollywood. He wrote the horror novel using a pseudonym.
Heyday is producing the adaptation of Erin Morgenstern’s novel The Night Circus. Steers also wrote and directed Igby Goes Down.
Spencer is repped by CAA and Janklow & Nesbit Associates. Steers is repped by CAA, Gotham Group and Jackoway Tyerman.
