'Citizen Jack' is the "Comic For People Who Hate Politics" (Exclusive)
In new comic book series Citizen Jack, creators Sam Humphries and Tommy Patterson take the sentiment that politics is going to hell literally by bringing a satanist and his friendly demon into the race for the White House. The Hollywood Reporter talked to Humphries about the series and has the exclusive reveal of the variant cover to the first issue by Sex Criminals co-creator Chip Zdarsky.
"This is a comic for people who hate politics or who feel frustrated or alienated or let down by politics," Humphries tells THR. "Horror is cathartic. Laughter is cathartic. Have you ever wanted to scream in terror about the American political system? But all that comes out is a laugh? Then Citizen Jack is for you."
The series centers around a presidential candidate who just happens to be a devil worshipper — but the writer denies that the horror comedy was inspired by the current presidential campaign. "That's something really smart people would do," he jokes. "Nobody believes us, so, yes! We knew this would happen all along," he added, referring to the rise of Donald Trump and connected Republican contest. "We are political prophets! Call us [Rachel] Maddow." (Equally tongue-in-cheek, he went on to declare Citizen Jack "the Great American Comic Book" because, as he put it, "America is the place where a drunk, downtrodden, demon-worshiping snowblower salesman actually stands a good chance at becoming president.")
Talking about Zdarksy's cover, which can be seen in full below, Humphries said that the Sex Criminals and Prison Funnies artist "was the natural choice for Citizen Jack because he's known for his comedy work, and he's horrified us all more than once. I have a feeling he'd hit it off real well with [the series' demonic sidekick] Marlinspike — too well."
Citizen Jack No. 1 will be released by Image Comics on Nov. 4. The regular cover is by series artist Patterson, with Zdarsky's cover available as a variant edition.
