Comic-Con: Ron Livingston/Lizzy Caplan Superhero Film to Make World Premiere (Exclusive)
"The Sidekick," also starring writer Rob Benedict, will be screened in San Diego.
The Sidekick, a "superhero" short film starring Rob Benedict (Supernatural), Ron Livingston and Lizzy Caplan, is heading to Comic-Con.
Directed by Michael J. Weithorn (The King of Queens) and written by Benedict, The Sidekick will make its world premiere in San Diego on Thursday, July 18, from 3-4 p.m. at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront's Indigo Ballroom, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
The Sidekick centers on a 40-year-old career sidekick, Max McCabe (Benedict), now past his prime in the fast-paced world of superhero-dom. When he is unceremoniously fired by his boss, Captain Wonder (Livingston), Max has no choice but to somehow find a place for himself in the regular world. (Watch the trailer for The Sidekick above.)
Panelists will include Weithorn and Benedict, with castmembers Josh Meyers, Jordan Peele, Martin Starr, Richard Speight Jr. and cinematographer Steve Lubensky. The Sidekick also stars Ike Barinholtz, Jason Ritter, Sam McMurray, Laura Silverman and Fred Stoller.
The filmmakers also have hopes of expanding The Sidekick further, either into a digital or cable TV series. Weithorn and Benedict plan on discussing the next phase following Comic-Con.
"Michael and I were privileged to work with an incredible cast, and most of them are regulars every year in San Diego. Comic-Con has become a breeding ground for what's next in entertainment, and we're looking forward to diving into the next phase after our premiere," Benedict said in a statement to THR. "There is so much more to be done with this concept and no shortage of distribution platforms on which to do it."
"I’ve been in the comedy field for over 30 years, and this is definitely one of my very favorite projects,” said Weithorn. “I’m optimistic that the Comic-Con faithful will dig it. And after our premiere in San Diego, we’re going to look at adapting it as a cable half-hour or perhaps in a digital format. There are a lot more stories to be told with this character.”
