'Dark Knight Rises' Director Christopher Nolan Is 'Finished' With Batman, Won't Direct Justice League Film
"This is the end of our take on this character," the filmmaker says, denying rumors he'll direct a superhero ensemble movie.
If there's a Justice League in Warner Bros.' near future, it will be without Christopher Nolan.
The filmmaker, promoting The Dark Knight Rises over the weekend with press junkets in Los Angeles as well as attending a hand-and-foot ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theatrer, said he has no plans for any Justice League movie—or any more Batman movies, for that matter.
"I've got no plans to do anything more, and certainly, no involvement with any Justice League project," he told the Associated Press.
It’s not only fans who were speculating that Nolan would be involved with a Justice League movie but Warners insiders as well. In the past couple of weeks, rumors were hitting a fever pitch that Nolan, who is already producing the Superman reboot Man of Steel, would oversee but not direct a movie version of DC’s superhero team.
It would seem natural for Nolan to step into such a godfatherly role, since last year Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov said the studio was already making plans to reboot the Batman franchise … with Nolan.
"Chris Nolan and [producing partner and wife] Emma Thomas will be producing it, so it will be a conversation with them about what the next phase is," Robinov told the Los Angeles Times in March 2011.
But that may no longer be the case. Indeed, Nolan over the weekend gave the impression he was hanging up the cowl for good.
"We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman," he said. "This is the end of our take on this character."
Nolan added: "Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished. The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to reinterpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him. We've had our say on the character."
