DC's 'Injustice: Gods Among Us' Comic Gets Renewed For Third Year
After taking on the Justice League and Green Lanterns, the third volume of the digital series pits a rogue Superman against Constantine and the magicians of the DC Universe.
The second volume of DC Entertainment’s Injustice: Gods Among Us hasn’t even finished, but news has already broken of a late September launch for Injustice: Year Three, continuing the tale of Superman’s fall from grace by pitting him against the magicians of the DC Universe.
Tom Taylor, writer of the first two volumes of the digital-first series, continues with the third and told IGN that the high concept of the new volume is “Superman versus Constantine,” adding, “do you need anything else?”
The series tells the backstory of the 2013 video game that took place in an alternate world where Superman has become a worldwide dictator, using the world while Batman leads an insurgency of other DC heroes against him. According to the game, it took five years for the world to reach the point where the game began, giving Taylor and artists including Bruno Redondo and Tom Derenick a lot of mythology to play with.
Each volume of the series has centered on Superman coming up against a different level of interference in his growing desire to control the world; the first saw him up against other members of the Justice League, the second pits him against space police the Green Lantern Corps, and for the third, it’s Superman versus magic.
“It’s a difficult one, as magic versus Superheroes is something I’ve seen done badly many times but my editor, Jim Chadwick, and I are really pushing this one in ways we hope people will enjoy,” Taylor said. “As soon as I thought of pitting the occult hero against Superman’s regime, I had to see it. I think the entire pitch was ‘Constantine versus Superman’ and Jim was immediately on board. All of the other magical characters that come with it are going to make this one hell of a story too, and Batman having to team up with the cynical Mage should be a heap of fun.”
Add in the fact the the NBC Constantine series will be raising the character’s profile at the same time, and the decision to add the character to the series is an even more canny decision.
Injustice: Year Three launches digitally September 30.
