DreamWorks Ani Picks 'Matilda' Musical's Tim Minchin to Score 'Larrikins'
The comedian, writer and composer, who grew up in Australia, will write the music and lyrics to the project set in the outback.
Comedian, writer and composer Tim Minchin, who commands a global cult following and made a splash on Broadway and London with his score for Matilda the Musical, is writing the music for DreamWorks Animation's Larrikins.
The-U.K. born comedian, who grew up in Australia, will write the score and lyrics for the film named after Australian slang for roustabout youngsters.
The project is set in the Australian outback and details the story of an uptight bilby, a marsupial who lives in the desert and leaves the security of his family burrow for a musical adventure.
It is based on an original idea written by Harry Cripps (Supernova) and produced by Christina Steinberg (Rise of the Guardians).
Minchin said: "I was lucky enough to grow up in Western Australia and know that the Australian outback is vast and spellbinding and heart-stoppingly beautiful, and the characters that inhabit it are unique and hilarious and tough and cheeky. I am hugely excited to be working with Harry and the DreamWorks Animation team in their mission to capture some of this unique aesthetic and quirky, iconoclastic culture on film. It's going to be bloody good fun."
The film will be managed by DWA head of development Gregg Taylor and development executive Amie Karp.
"Our whole team is incredibly excited about this project," said DWA chief creative officer Bill Damaschke. "We've been looking to work with the immensely talented Tim Minchin on something for a while, and there is no doubt that this project is a perfect fit. He and Harry Cripps will be a fantastic team."
