DreamWorks Picks Up YA Fantasy 'Shadow and Bone'

DreamWorks has picked up the film rights to Shadow and Bone, the debut YA fantasy from Leigh Bardugo. Harry Potter producer David Heyman is attached to produce as is Jeffrey Clifford (Up in the Air).

The book was published in June from Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group. It is intended to be the first of three books, to be known as the Grisha Trilogy.

The first book takes place in a land under attack of a swath of darkness filled with creatures that feast on human flesh. A young woman discovers she has a dormant power that could be a key to turning the tide and is taken to be trained by her country’s magical elite.

The book debuted on the New York Times’ best-seller list, went back to a third printing, and had the rare distinction of being an Amazon book of the month pick for both the children’s category and adult category.

The next book in the series, Siege and Storm, is scheduled for release in June 2013 with the third installment coming in summer 2014.
