'Dredd' Comic Book Sequel to Get Re-Release
The comic book sequel to the 2012 action movie will get a second print -- with a new cover from artist Jock -- after the first sold out pre-release.
While the prospect of a movie sequel to 2012's Dredd 3D seems like a somewhat distant dream, the character's comic book prospects are looking much brighter, with Dredd: Underbelly, the official comic format sequel to the movie, being rushed back into print after an immediate sellout for the first printing.
Dredd: Underbelly's success -- it sold out on a distributor level before its actual release last month -- and subsequent reprinting is a big deal for Dredd publishers Rebellion in ways that go beyond the futuristic lawman's cinematic prospects.
Underbelly was the first release from the publisher created specifically for the comic book speciality store direct market in the U.S. comic book format. Although Judge Dredd material has been available in the U.S. for some time, it has traditionally been either reprinted from the British 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine titles and/or licensed to other publishers for the U.S.
Whether the success of Dredd: Underbelly means that Rebellion will release more work into the direct market is unknown at this time. For now, the second printing of Dredd: Underbelly, which will feature a brand new cover from Jock, who worked on the movie as a concept and storyboard artist, is available to pre-order from comic book stores between now and February 18.
