Emma Thompson Joins 'Beautiful Creatures'
UPDATED: The project is drawing keen interest at the European Film Market in Berlin, where Summit International is selling Richard LaGravanese's book-to-film adaptation.
Emma Thompson is the latest to join the cast of Beautiful Creatures, Alcon’s adaptation of a young adult novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
The project, written and being directed by Richard LaGravanese, has been filling up its roll call. Youngsters and relative newcomers Jack O’Connell and Alice Englert earlier this week came on board to play the characters at the heart of the supernatural coming-of-age story, about two star-crossed teens, one a local boy, the other a mysterious new girl, who uncover dark secrets about their families, their history and their town. Viola Davis was the first person cast in the production last week.
The casting comes as Summit Entertainment sells international rights to the project at the European Film Market in Berlin, which go underway Thursday. Beautiful Creatures is garnering key interest this week as foreign buyers look for the next Twilight or Hunger Games.
Warner Bros., which has an output deal with Alcon, is releasing the movie domestically.

According to Alcon, Thompson will play the dual role of Mrs. Lincoln, who is a small town religious firebrand, and Sarafine, who is the dark witch who possesses her.
Alcon’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing, as is Erwin Stoff and Molly Smith.
Thompson next appears on screen in Sony’s Men in Black III.
