Now Fictional Characters Are Taking the Ice Bucket Challenge
Archie Andrews, Homer Simpson and Green Lantern are freezing themselves for a good cause
Say what you like about Archie Andrews, but for a fictional teenager, he’s pretty on top of contemporary trends. (Well, when he’s not being shot in a possible future for defending his best friend, of course). Case in point: he’s just taken the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
In a two-panel strip by Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre Sacasa and Dan Parent that debuted on Comic Book Resources, Archie accepts a nomination from traditional rival Reggie Mantle and gets doused by Betty and Veronica before naming fellow fictional characters Batman, Wolverine and Hellboy as his own nominations. To accompany the strip, Archie made a donation to the ALS Association.
Archie is far from the first fictional character to accept the challenge. Ignoring Henry Cavill’s soaking while wearing the Superman costume from 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Fox’s Homer Simpson participated in a video posted online Monday, while Green Lantern Corps artist Bernard Chang got a jump on the meme with an Instagram image of lead character John Stewart joining in two weeks ago.
The ALS Association announced Tuesday that the Ice Bucket Challenge had raised $88.5 million since July 29, with Barbara Newhouse calling herself “simply awestruck at the incredible generosity” of those who had participated and donated.
