Hillary Clinton to Appear in Valiant's 'Faith' for November Comic Book Campaign Stop
As if Valiant Entertainment's Faith hadn't had enough of a good 2016 so far, the series is going to see the year out with a special issue featuring an unexpected guest star: presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Clinton will appear in a story in the November issue of Faith, written by Superman and X-Factor veteran Louise Simonson, with art by Pere Perez. (The issue will also feature a story by regular Faith team Jody Houser, Meghan Hetrick and Marguerite Sauvage, as well as a third story leading into the upcoming Harbinger Renegades series, which will also feature the Faith character.)
In an interview with the Washington Post, editor Tom Brennan explained the thinking behind the guest appearance in the series starring the female superhero by saying, "This is a historic candidacy with Clinton and we just thought, [this is] something comics [have] done many times before, and with [Valiant] starting to come into our own as a company, we wanted to join that proud tradition."
Brennan himself is part of the tradition of political figures appearing in comic books; in 2009, he was one of the editors on Amazing Spider-Man No. 583, in which President Barack Obama met Marvel's wall-crawling hero. That wasn't Obama's first comic book appearance — months earlier, Image Comics' The Savage Dragon No. 137 featured that comic's titular hero endorsing the politician as president before the campaign had finished.
Clinton's appearance is likely to draw more attention to Valiant's Faith ahead of the first issue of the character's new ongoing series launching this Wednesday. That series is the result of the success — both in terms of sales and online fan excitement — of the Faith miniseries, which ran from January through April this year and broke sales records for the publisher.
Faith No. 5, the issue featuring Clinton, will be released digitally and in comic book stores Nov. 2.
