'Hunger Games': New Trailer Takes Flight with Mockingjay Pin, More of the Reaping (Video)
The Super Bowl spot for Lionsgate’s highly anticipated film focuses on the relationship between Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss and her sister.
“Happy Hunger Games!” says President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the first 15 seconds of the short but sweet new trailer from Lionsgate for The Hunger Games.
Happy, indeed. The new trailer, which is set to air during the Super Bowl preshow, may be the best one yet, providing a balanced meal of emotion and action.
The trailer begins with Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) giving her sister, Prim (Willow Shields), the mockingjay pin, a symbol used throughout Suzanne Collins’ three books.
Then, at the reaping, Prim’s name is selected for the deadly games, in which two representatives (or tributes) from each of 12 districts must compete in a fight to the death. Katniss can be seen volunteering to take her younger sister’s place in the games.
“There’s 24 of us, Gale, and only one comes out,” Katniss can be seen saying to her friend and District 12 hunting partner (played by Liam Hemsworth). There are also very brief glimpses of the tributes training for the games, and even a couple of shots from the Games themselves, which fans have not seen much of yet.
The new trailer for Gary Ross’ film also ends with the mockingjay pin, which is placed on Katniss’ jacket by her fashion consultant Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) before she enters the Games.
THR interviewed Ross and the cast of the adventure film, which hits theaters March 23, for a recent cover story. The Oscar-nominated Ross and others close to the movie revealed many previously unknown secrets surrounding the highly anticipated film.
THR learned that Lawrence took three days to decide if she would take the role, which would inevitably skyrocket the Winter’s Bone actress into stardom.
“I thought, 'I don’t want to miss out because I’m scared. Me being scared, I never want that to stop me from doing something.' But I knew in my heart that I wanted it — it was about working out all the fears,” she told THR. (Read THR’s full Hunger Games cover story here.)
