New 'Alien: Covenant' Image Confirms James Franco Casting

Ahead of a sneak peek Wednesday, a new image from Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant has been released, showing the full crew of the Covenant for the first time — including the debut of a particularly dapper and presumably ill-fated James Franco.

Franco seemed curiously absent from the first trailer for Ridley Scott's follow-up to his 2012 franchise prequel Prometheus (although it's possible that he's the unfortunate figure who gets alien particulate in his ear at the 1:11 mark), so the sight of him standing in the center of the new image, wearing a blanket that looks like a robe, in an image called "AC_LastSup_group" feels particularly interesting; what inferences should be drawn from referencing the iconic Leonardo da Vinci painting?

(Adding to the above question, what, if anything, should be taken from the Biblical references in regards to the movie? Beyond the Last Supper reference, both the ship and the movie are named for a term that has its own biblical meanings, after all.)

The new image heralds the debut of new footage from the movie Wednesday, in an ad break during FX's critically acclaimed Legion, the first peek at the movie since the Christmas Eve release of the initial trailer. The movie, which also stars Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride, will be released May 19.
