Kid-Friendly 'Marvel Universe: Guardians of the Galaxy' Comic Launching in 2015

Animated adaptation will bring Marvel's 'Guardians' comic franchise to six regular series
Marvel Entertainment

Good news for younger viewers who continue to be hooked on a feeling by this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie: Marvel Entertainment announced Thursday that a new comic book series aimed at readers of all ages, Marvel Universe: Guardians of the Galaxy, will launch in 2015.

The series will be written by Joe Caramagna, already responsible for Marvel Universe: Avengers Assemble and Marvel Universe: Ultimate Spider-Man. Like those latter titles, Marvel Universe: Guardians of the Galaxy will adapt episodes of Disney XD animated series of the same name, which was announced last month at New York Comic Con.

“I love comics, especially super hero comics,” Caramagna told Marvel.com about his work on the Marvel Universe line. “If I want them to be around for my kids and my grandkids, we have to find that next generation of fans to keep the lights on for us when we're done.”

The announcement of Marvel Universe: Guardians of the Galaxy underscores the success of the Guardians movie and the impact it has had on Marvel’s publishing line. When the series launches in 2015 — the publisher hasn’t given a firm date yet — it will be the sixth Guardians-related series from Marvel, accompanying Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians 3000, The Legendary Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and the Spring 2015-launching Gamora, written by Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

That’s a 500% increase from the beginning of this year, when only Guardians of the Galaxy was being published, and a sign of what a hit movie can do for a comic book franchise. Whether Marvel plans something similar following Avengers: Age of Ultron seems unlikely; after all, there are already six series with Avengers in the title as-is, to say nothing of the Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow series.
