After the stellar opening of Lights Out over the weekend, New Line has thrown into development a sequel to the hit horror movie, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

While the project is in its early days, producers James Wan and Lawrence Grey would return for the follow-up, as would director David F. Sandberg, on whose short the original film was based.

Eric Heisserer is in talks to return to write the script, and at this stage New Line and producers are mulling concepts. No deals are made.

Lights Out was made on a budget of $5 million and debuted to $21.6 million. Its cume currently stands at $27.6 million.

The story tells of a ghost entity that lives in the shadow and dark recesses of buildings as it haunts a family. Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Bateman and Alexander DiPersia star.
