Marvel Returns 'Amazing Spider-Man' to 'Year One'
In time for this summer's movie sequel, Marvel Entertainment launches a new series about the earliest days of the wall-crawling super hero.
If The Amazing Spider-Man 2 inspires new fans of the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, Marvel Entertainment will have a new way for them to get onboard the character's comic book adventures. Launching in May, The Amazing Spider-Man, Year One revisits the first twelve months of Peter Parker's crime-fighting career.
"When you're looking at things in [the original 1960s] issues, you're going: 'Wait a minute! How did this happen? How did he get this? Where did this come from? Why didn't Aunt May ever wonder about that?'" explained writer Dan Slott, who'll juggle this series with his work on the regular Amazing Spider-Man comic book. "You start looking at it closer and closer and you go, 'There's a story here that we're not seeing.'"
Slott isn't saying quite what that story is yet, although he promises Spider-Man's "first villain who is his own age," who happens to have been inspired by the hero's exploits. "There's no way in Peter's mind that he's not responsible for everything that guy's going to do," he teased.
This isn't the first time that Marvel has tried to fill in the gaps of the original Spider-Man stories; the fan-favorite Untold Tales of Spider-Man series in the 1990s did pretty much the same thing, while the later Spider-Man: Chapter One series opted to retell the original stories in a revised fashion to close narrative holes (and, in the process, create many new ones).
The Amazing Spider-Man, Year One will be illustrated by Ramon Perez, with covers from Alex Ross.
