While the Marvel Universe undergoes its Secret Wars this summer, a new team will emerge to defend the defenseless — and also promote gender diversity within the publisher’s line, as well. Introducing A-Force — an all-women team of Avengers.

The new series, launching in May, will be co-written by G. Willow Wilson, whose Ms. Marvel series for the publisher has been a sizable critical success, and Marguerite Bennett, with art by X-Men’s Jorge Molina.

“We've purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies,” Wilson told Mashable about the new team. “They'll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?”

The new Avengers-branded book follows the 2013 launch of X-Men, another franchise series that featured an all-female cast., and that year’s Fearless Defenders, which again focused on an all-female cast. A-Force will feature “Warzones” branding, described by Marvel as offering “a glimpse of what the future holds” for the publisher. Could more diversity lie in Marvel’s future?
