More Than Meets the Feet: Nike, Hasbro Team for Megatron Trainer
Nike announces the Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer Max, inspired by both NFL player Calvin Johnson and the robotic leader of the Decepticons.
Finally, there's a way to show your support not only for Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, but also for the genocidal giant robot that he shares a name with. Nike has teamed up with Transformers manufacturer Hasbro to create the Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer Max -- which is accompanied by an exclusive toy of the robotic Decepticon leader.
Nike describes the trainer, which will be available at select Nike retail locations throughout the U.S. as well as online at Nike.com, as having "a robotic, armored look" with purple upper and red accents, as well as the words "Show No Mercy" -- Johnson's favorite quote from the fictional Transformer -- appearing under the forefoot strap. The shoe also sports the iconic Decepticon logo.
The accompanying action figure, meanwhile, is a 5-inch-tall representation of the classic evil robot that has been "inspired" by the NFL star, sporting similar colors as the trainer, designed to be "broad yet agile [and] mirror Johnson's speed and power" in its jet plane mode. The figure also sports a football, just to emphasize the inspiration for this particular incarnation.
Nike is making the most of the collaboration, also announcing a limited edition "Megatron Rises 3-Pack," which features the regular CJ81 trainer alongside variant versions, the Megatron Nike Air Trainer SCII and Nike CJ81 Megatron Elite TD Cleat, the latter of which is described as being "inspired by the Allspark from Transformers lore," with packaging for the limited edition set featuring original Transformers artwork.
