Amidst Movie and TV Announcements, IDW Teases New Comics
It may have been the movies that grabbed most of the headlines, but at this weekend's Comic-Con, IDW announced a raft of new comic projects.
If the amount of movie and television announcements from this year's Comic-Con have you wondering whether or not there were actually any comic announcements made at the show, you can rest assured that there were -- and that the most exciting ones came from IDW Publishing, who unleashed a slew of news about unexpected new projects, revivals and at least one upcoming comic that seems too weird to be true.
While many comic publishers pushed out their Comic-Con-related announcements before the show itself, so as to avoid disappearing in the buzz from Hall H, IDW managed to hold back and pretty much dominate Con when it came to comics news with new series from comic legend like Walter Simonson -- returning to the Norse mythology that made his career on The Mighty Thor with his new series Ragnarok -- and Cerebus' Dave Sim, as well as U.S. series for British sci-fi series Rogue Trooper and Sinister Dexter and a partnership with NBC's Saturday Night Live for Taran Killam's spy parody The Illegitimates.
In one of the more "Wait… what?" announcements of the show, IDW also announced plans to adapt Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in the future (although no writer, artist nor publication date has been set yet). And yet, even that paled before the news that the publisher is also reviving classic comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland with Eric Shanower and Gabriel Rodriguez stepping into the admittedly-massive shoes left by creator Windsor McCay.
Little Nemo, which ran for 21 years at the start of the 20th century in the New York Herald and New York American, has been described as one of the greatest newspaper strips of all time and served as inspiration for the likes of Maurice Sendak, Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore, amongst many others. Clearly, Shanower and Rodriguez have something to live up to with the new series, which launches in Spring 2014.
