Namco Bandai Beams Down ‘Star Trek’ Game on April 23
After a long wait, Trekkers are in for a double feature Star Trek adventure in 2013. First up is an original video game from Paramount Pictures, Namco Bandai Games and developer Digital Extremes, Star Trek The Video Game, which launches April 23, 2013 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – three weeks before Star Trek Into Darkness hits the big screen on May 17, 2013.
The new game features the voices and likenesses of actors Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Dr. Spock), Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Dr. “Bones” McCoy), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov).
The game’s original story was penned by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk in collaboration with Star Trek Into Darkness writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.
The game will bridge the story lines between director J.J. Abrams’ two Star Trek films and allow players to command the U.S.S. Enterprise on an original adventure that brings back the enemy race called the Gorn.
“The Gorn are among the most iconic villians in the Star Trek universe and their role in this game certainly lives up to that persona,” said Brian Miller, Senior Vice President at Paramount Pictures and Lead Game Producer. “Kirk and Spock find themselves in an incredibly challenging amount of mayhem as they confront the Gorn throughout the game.”
More than just lizard-skinned foes, the Gorn are a blood-thirsty race determined to conquer the galaxy. A true military dictatorship, the Gorn are made up of billions of self-sacrificing warriors across thousands of colonies, each focused on the conquest of alien races. By utilizing their chaos-causing infectious venom, the Gorn seed mayhem and destruction as they destroy populations and deplete planets of their resources.
“There are certain elements at the core of Star Trek – insurmountable odds, exploration, villains like the Gorn and heroes like Kirk and Spock,” said Carlson Choi, vice president of marketing and Namco Bandai Games America Inc. “Our goal is to pull gamers as deep into the Star Trek universe as possible and an integral part of that is the talent that make these characters their own."
Throughout the development process, which got additional time when the sequel was pushed back to 2013, the game makers have worked closely with the Hollywood creatives to design an original story line that connects with the film universe.
“We’ve been working really closely with not only J.J. and his team at Bad Robot and all the people back at Paramount, but with all of the departments that are working on the films,” said Miller. “Everyone from the sound design guys, the special effects guys and ILM, to the costume, and the creature designers. Michael Giacchino, who did the music for both films, scored the music for this game. That kind of authenticity is vital for the success of this game.”
This is the first Star Trek game to feature cooperative gameplay, which will allow players to step into the roles of Kirk and Spock and experience different gameplay elements with each character.
“We really wanted to make a completely immersive co-op experience because Star Trek, at its core, is a co-op property,” said Miller. “It’s about Kirk and Spock. It’s the Ying and the Yang, the cowboy versus the logical guy, and that really lends itself to what kind of co-op game we wanted to make through both the gameplay and the story line.”
PC gamers will be able to experience the Star Trek game in stereo 3D through a partnership with NVIDIA and its 3D Vision technology.
