Details about 20th Century Fox's upcoming X-Men spinoff New Mutants remain mostly under wraps, but both producer Simon Kinberg and writer/director Josh Boone have been offering teases about just what characters will be seen onscreen when the movie debuts in 2017.

Talking to Collider, Kinberg didn't just offer an update on the movie's potential shooting schedule — production is currently targeted for an early 2017 start, with the second draft handed in to the studio last month — he also confirmed the presence of a familiar face in the cast.

"Right now, as the movie exists, Professor X would be a part of a New Mutants movie," Kinberg said, although he didn't elaborate on whether that would be James McAvoy's Professor or Patrick Stewart's original, older incarnation.

As to the actual lineup of the teenage mutant team, Boone has been dropping some hints via his Instagram feed, which last week shared portraits of six members of the Marvel Entertainment team — Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot and Warlock — along with a group shot of the assembled group (sans Warlock). Each of the images was captioned with hashtagged versions of the character's superhero name, their secret identity and the hashtag #NewMutants.

Each of these six characters were co-created by New Mutants' co-creator and original writer Chris Claremont, with four of them — Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball and Sunspot — among the original lineup of the team that first appeared in Marvel Graphic Novel No. 4 in 1982. Magik joined the team in 1984's New Mutants No. 14, while Warlock signed on in No. 21 later that year. (Bob McLeod co-created the original four members, Dave Cockrum co-created Magik, with Bill Sienkiewicz acting as co-creator for Warlock.)

The six characters arguably constitute the core New Mutants comic book team, with the only missing members being Karma, the only original member to be absent from Boone's Instagram lineup; Magma, the team's first additional member; and Cypher, gifted with the dual powers to be really good at linguistics and to divide a fanbase about how useful he is to the team in any given situation.

Boone's inclusion of Warlock in his Instagram lineup might also point to a potential plot for the movie; in comic book lore, he is an alien that escapes to Earth to avoid a confrontation with his father, the leader of a race of warlike robots that exist to devour all organic life. Unfortunately, his father followed, forcing the team to defend the world from a seemingly unstoppable robot. What sounds more like a cinematic bonding experience for a group of young super-powered kids than that … ?
