The Next Joss Whedon Marvel Movie? 'Thor' (in Parts)
Director Alan Taylor reveals that Whedon fixed three problematic scenes in the original screenplay for "Thor: The Dark World."
When Joss Whedon signed on to his three-year deal with Marvel Studios, it wasn't just to lock down his schedule so that Avengers: Age of Ultron and Agents of SHIELD would all get made on time. Apparently, writing parts of other Marvel movies was on his to-do list as well, as Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor has revealed.
"Joss came in to save our lives a couple of times," Taylor told SFX Magazine. "We had a major scene that was not working on the page at all in London, and he basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team or something. He came down, rewrote the scene, and before he got back to his plane I sort of grabbed him and said, 'And this scene and this scene?' And he rewrote two other scenes that I thought had problems."
The rewritten scenes, Taylor said, "were just much better and much lighter on their feet" than the earlier versions. They were apparently "much more fun, much more surprising than what we had been trying to do," he added.
Taylor went on to say that he got where Whedon was coming from. "I can relate to guys who come out of the TV world, since that's where I come from," the director explained. "Being able to land and work and solve a problem quickly … I really was grateful." Clearly, Whedon is earning his keep and then some over at Marvel Studios, which begs the question: How much money will the studio end up offering to persuade him to stick around after 2015?
